Polk County Solid Waste provides scheduled residential waste collection for citizens living in unincorporated areas of the county, including Poinciana, FL. All households receive two garbage and one yard waste collection each week. One weekly recycling pick-up is conducted in the more densely populated areas of the county. All residents residing in unincorporated areas are assessed for this service. The county contracts with a private company for waste collection services. Below is a list of items that your hauler will and will not accept for hauling and disposal:
Garbage/Rubbish
Waste generated from the preparation and handling of food and all paper materials and product packaging Garbage should be properly bagged or placed in water-tight containers with individual units not exceeding 50 pounds in weight. Containers should not exceed 45-gallon capacity.
Yard Waste
Lawn cuttings, tree trimmings, leaves and other green waste. Yard waste should be reduced to a manageable size with limbs neatly stacked in bundles. Place grass clippings, leaves or yard debris in bags or garbage cans.
Large or Bulky Items
Refrigerators, stoves, carpet and furniture. Large or bulky will be picked-up from curbside at no charge within 72 hours of notification to Florida Refuse (863) 665-1489.
Unacceptable Items
Waste from tree removal, land clearing or construction. Cars, boats, tires, automobile parts, engines, asbestos, radioactive materials, explosives, biomedical or hazardous wastes. Collection Schedule
The Northern half of the County primarily receives garbage collection on Monday and Thursday with yard waste on Wednesday. All loads should be placed curb-side before 6:00AM and containers removed within 72 hours.
The Southern half of the County primarily receives garbage collection on Tuesday and Friday with yard waste on Wednesday. All loads should be placed curb-side before 6:00AM and containers removed within 72 hours.
Residential waste collection normally occurs between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. There is no residential waste collection on weekends.

There will be no residential collection service on the following holidays:

If regular collection service falls on one of the above holidays, your garbage, yard trash or recyclables will be picked up on your next scheduled collection day. Example: If your collection days are Monday and Thursday, and the holiday falls on that Thursday (example: Thanksgiving), your trash will be picked up the following Monday.
Assessments and Exemptions
Polk County assesses fees to citizens in unincorporated areas of the County for waste collection. These fees are itemized on the Trim Notice you receive in the mail.

Commercial Classification
Owners of residential properties may apply for commercial classification based on the following criteria:
1. An apartment complex with less than ten units in the same building or two or more contiguously located single-family dwelling units, owned by the same person.
2. Residential property where such extraordinary circumstances exist that it would be manifestly unfair to require such residential property to utilize residential collection service.
3. Residential property contiguous to commercial property owned by the same person. A contract for commercial collection service is required.
Residential property owners may file an application for commercial classification rate before July 1 of each year for the upcoming fiscal year.
